Metamorphosis:
An Approach to Addressing Prenatal
Patterns
Cindy Silverlock, CMT, CHT
What Is Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis is a hands on approach to life that realizes the importance
of the gestation period and the stress patterns developed in the womb.
By addressing this time period one is able to release these patterns and
become more balanced, letting go of limiting patterns, blockages and attitudes
that keep us from living fully and joyfully in the present.
The Beginnings of Metamorphosis
Metamorphosis was founded by an English gentleman, Robert St. John,
in the early sixties while working on the spinal reflexes of the feet.
Certain areas, he realized, corresponded with psychological and physical
memories from the prenatal period. So, as he was releasing disharmonies
in the spine, he was also releasing disharmonies from the prenatal period.
This discovery led to a great improvement in the responses of his clients.
Not only were there physical changes, but also changes in the attitudes
of mind. The change in the attitude of mind is the premise of what Metamorphosis
is about, for it is through our attitudes that we view and experience life.
Another important aspect of how Metamorphosis was discovered came
from Mr. St. John’s study of Naturopathy. He noticed that the focus was
on symptom removal. People’s symptoms would leave but new ones would often
surface because the underlying issue was not being addressed. The underlying
symptoms quite often stem from stresses developed in the womb. Taking the
stress back to its origin is the only way to permanently remove it.
Many of us are aware of how the trauma of birth can affect us later
in life. Metamorphosis takes this back a bit further and believes that
many of our disturbances were created at conception. We are conscious beings
during the gestation period. Our attitudes toward life and the stress factors
from our genetic and karmic patterns, as well as the prenatal experience
itself, all affect our development in the womb on the physical, mental,
and emotional levels. Using the concept of reflex points, we are able to
access the prenatal pattern. By addressing this time period we are working
where our stress patterns originated, and this enables one to release limiting
patterns from his or her life. The changes are permanent and profound because
the work addresses the underlying issue and not the symptomatic expression.
The reason working with a child while it is still in the womb is
so important is that the child’s frame of consciousness while in the womb
affects how well developmental stages. It will impact the child throughout
the pregnancy, the birth itself, and later in life. If there is a lot of
tension at conception from a consciousness point of reference, the following
stages of growth, preparing for birth, and birth itself will be affected.
A child’s energy is very focused on the task at hand. If there is tension,
the ability to move forward is hindered. For example, retarded children
are simply children who had a lot of tension and got held up in their development.
Metamorphosis views retardation as an extreme stress pattern. If the Mother
is having Metamorphosis sessions while she is pregnant, the baby will be
able to let go of minor or extreme stress patterns. This will enable all
children to be stronger and healthier.
Metamorphosis will allow for the development of the baby to go much
more smoothly, and the pregnancy for the Mother will be easier. The Mother
gets the added benefit of releasing her stress patterns at the same time,
enabling her to enjoy the process of pregnancy and childbirth to its fullest!
The Benefits of Metamorphosis on Mother and
Child
Mothers will greatly benefit from realizing that often a child’s
"problem, condition…" is actually an expression of prenatal stress
patterns. Mothers will be more empowered to assist their children in a
holistic way. Children love to have their feet worked on and respond very
quickly to Metamorphosis. Children who display signs of hyperactivity,
emotional problems, learning disabilities, physical challenge, etc. will
all benefit from this. The younger the child is, the more profound the
results can be.
Metamorphosis is a powerful process that can alleviate further stress
on the planet and in the home. If we can begin to understand the importance
of the prenatal process and its effect on our lives, then humanity as a
whole can shift out of it’s dysfunctional patterns. Midwives, mothers,
and people involved with the birth process or upbringing of children in
this world would benefit from becoming familiar with this work.
Metamorphosis - a useful tool for anyone working
with babies or birth or anyone interested in working with the trauma of
the prenatal period.
A midwife, nurse, or parent who knows Metamorphosis will be able
to assist the mother throughout her pregnancy and during the birth itself.
Often the length of child birth is due to the child’s stress patterns and
reluctance to move forward into life. Childbirth becomes easier and lighter
for the mother and baby when Metamorphosis is done during the actual birth.
Mothers can take over once the baby is born and assist the child as it
grows up. Metamorphosis is a process - not an overnight cure. It is a tool
for people to use professionally or in the home. It is for people of any
age, not just pregnant women and children. The benefit of working with
children in the womb and when they are young is that they get a head start
in living a more functional and joyful life. Metamorphosis is easy to learn,
and it is not necessary to have an understanding of the healing arts or
the birth process.

Biographical Note
CINDY SILVERLOCK
studied with Robert St. John, the founder. Her passion for the work inspired her
to create the U.S. Metamorphosis Journal in 1995 as a means
for St. John to keep the U.S. abreast of his new developments. The journal
went international in 1996 and lasted through 2001, when Cindy decided to put
her energy towards writing a book on Metamorphosis. Cindy has been
teaching Metamorphosis since 1991 and has taught in the US and Canada. Her
background includes a B.A. in Psychology, training in hypnotherapy, massage,
reiki and various other alternative modalities. Upon realizing the
profundity of Metamorphosis and appreciating its simplicity – she has devoted
her time solely to Metamorphosis since 1996. Cindy is also a Doula
(pregnancy & labor support) and is available to attend the birth of
Metamorphosis clients. Cindy is available to lecture. She has
lectured on Metamorphosis at the APPPAH (Association for Pre & Perinatal
Psychology & Health) Congress 12/97, Metamorphosis Conference 3/98, RAC
(Reflexology Association of California) Conference 10/99, APPPAH Congress 12/99
and the RAA(Reflexology Association of America) Conference 5/00. Website: www.MetamorphosisCenter.com
