Time Is of the Essence. Our Moratorium
has been in effect for two months, but in the last week the Bush
Administration dared to use the fact of record-level gasoline prices as
a prod for passage of the Bill, to get the support of the remaining one
or two Senators needed. With the Bill already passed in the House,
this apocalyptic environment is now closer than ever. The Bill
in Congress may pass in the next few weeks, unless we act now.

Moratorium” on whatever you are doing right now to attend to something that
threatens to affect your life, and all of ours, unless we “Pay Attention”
to what is -- right now -- being done against us,
in our name! It will take

This announcement will stay up until the energy bill has been defeated in
Congress, as Primal Spirit is,
in effect, taking a Moratorium until this threat has passed.
We urge you, now, to please read on and hear Mr. Redford out.

Over the next few weeks, President Bush and his congressional allies will
try once again to ram their disastrous energy bill through the
U.S.
Senate.
They fell only two votes
short in November and they've vowed to make passage of the
bill their top priority now that Congress has returned from
recess.
This bill may be the worst piece of legislation you and I will see in our
lifetimes.
It would pick your pocket, despoil your natural heritage, endanger
your family's health and smother your hope for a more secure
energy future.
We ignore this bill at our own peril.
Let me tell you our simple plan for thwarting this shameless attack on our
environment and pocketbooks.
If millions of Americans each took one minute to protest this bill, it would
cause every senator who is tempted to vote for it to think twice about doing
so.
You can make this happen within the next few hours by doing two things:
First, go to

and send your two senators an email or fax, telling them to vote against
this pro-polluter energy bill.
Then, forward this message as an email to at least four of your friends,
family members or colleagues.
I am emailing this message to 550,000 NRDC Members and activists.
If each one forwards this message to just four more people,
we will generate a national tidal wave of opposition before this day is over.
And that won't be a moment too soon.
This disgraceful bill would pick our pockets to hand out billions of dollars
in taxpayer subsidies to the oil, coal and nuclear industries. That's their
long-awaited reward for making big-time contributions to the Bush-Cheney campaign.
They profit while the rest of us pay the price -- in tax dollars and environmental
degradation.
This bill gives the energy giants a free pass to drill their way through
our last wild places, burn more dirty coal, build a new generation of risky
nuclear power plants and dramatically increase air pollution that would sicken
the vulnerable -- especially children and seniors -- for decades to come.
It would establish oil and gas development as the dominant use of our federal
public lands, open national parks to the construction of electricity transmission
lines, exempt polluters from core provisions of our clean air and water laws
and waive liability for the producers of the toxic gasoline additive MTBE
-- even though it has contaminated at least 1,500 public water supplies in
all 50 American states.
You'd be hard-pressed to come up with a more backward-looking, wasteful and
self-defeating energy "plan" than this one.
At a time when the federal deficit is soaring and we're going
to war in the
Persian Gulf
oilfields, the White House wants to stick us with the tab for prolonging
our destructive dependence on fossil fuels, foreign oil and dangerous nuclear
technology.
This is not a national energy policy.
This is corporate welfare, pure and simple. Estimates of the bill's corporate
tax breaks range from $23 billion to well over $100 billion with loan guarantees
included. No surprise there.
Big energy companies cooked up this raid on the federal treasury during hundreds
of secret meetings with Vice President Cheney's energy task force and their
allies on Capitol Hill.
It's one thing to gouge taxpayers.
But to claim this rip-off is in the national interest, as the White House
would have us believe, is a slap in the face to every working American.
Poll after poll shows that the vast majority of voters -- of both parties
-- understand that we simply must reduce our out-of-control appetite for
fossil fuels if we ever are to secure energy independence.
That means turning American rooftops into the
Persian Gulf
of solar energy. It means producing
cars that get 40 miles per gallon. It means constructing efficient buildings
that use half the energy of the average American office without sacrificing
comfort.
Making this transformation to a super-efficient, low-pollution economy would
save consumers upwards of a trillion dollars, spare our last wild places
from destruction, improve our health, slow global warming and reduce our dependence
on undemocratic regimes overseas.
It's a no-brainer to anyone living outside the White House.
But unless millions of Americans speak out right now, the enactment of the
president's energy bill will doom us to an apocalyptic future of blighted
wilderness, poisonous air pollution, devastating climate change and endless
wars over fossil fuels.

Apocalypse, Or New Age? The Emerging Perinatal Unconscious
WHY PRIMAL SPIRIT ?
We have noticed two things in the New Age/ progressive movement: First,
there is an absolute void when it comes to a forum where information and
resources having to do with the cathartic, deep experiential, deep feeling,
"shadow" work, birth related, spiritual emergency, shamanistic, radically
political, radically spiritual side of the New Age movement can be shared
and can cross-fertilize. This part of the consciousness-transformation movement
is the one Jung addressed when he wrote, "One does not become enlightened
by imaging figures of light, but by making the Darkness conscious." This
part of the New Age movement is often the one that people come to when talking
doesn’t work, when affirmations don’t work, when "positive thinking" and
"creating one’s reality through thinking it" have played themselves out and
one is still left ever lured into negative situations, and so on.
While each of
these have their place and can be helpful at times, it is a powerful seduction
to "think" or delude oneself into superficial change when it is deeper, more
difficult, more experiential change that is necessary. Consequently people
wed themselves to denial, and the vast majority of New Age prescriptions
can be used that way. People often come to the "deeper wave of the New Age"
only as a last resort.
Along with this
denial of our darker and painful side goes the rejection of the knowledge
that comes from it — the facts we would wish not to know. Witness:
The rejection of deMause’s psychohistory and its discovery that the history
of childhood is a history of child abuse, and that it is incest that has
been universal, not the incest taboo (see
"The History of Childhood As the History of Child Abuse"
). The rejection of the evidence for birth trauma and the lifelong
negative effects of the Western techno-pharmacological birth. The similar
rejection of the evidence of the lifelong negative effects of circumcision
and the unconscious role it plays in the creation of killers for the patristic
war machine (see Jeannine Parvati Baker’s article, "
Ending Circumcision: Where Sex and Violence First Meet
"). The rejection of the integration of the body and of Nature as
important on the spiritual path. And the continued widespread rejection
of feeling and passion, even in New Age groups, who often envision the new
consciousness, the new man/woman as akin to the emotionless, robot-like, and
deeply repressed or unspontaneous — like a Spock or a Data.
To the contrary,
this deeper wave of the New Age, this primal spirit is the child noticing
and expressing that the Emperor has no clothes when it turns out he is naked.
And finally — believe it or not — because it takes serious things so seriously
(at times), it is also able to "lighten up" in giddy absurdity and silliness
the rest of the time. (Hence, the name SSILLY God*
.) Considering all this — especially the passion and silliness — this
component of the New Age movement might be called (with deep respect and
sympathetic silliness) the Abbie Hoffman wave of the New Age. Certainly
we are those who would rather be the Yippies than the yuppies of the New
Age.
The other thing
we noticed about the New Age movement was its tendency to group into factions,
like religions. There are separate publications for holotropic breathworkers,
past-lives and regression therapists, primalers, psychohistorians, rebirthers,
humanistic psychologists, pre- and perinatal psychologists, shamanism, yoga
enthusiasts, transpersonalists, new consciousness and new physics advocates,
feminists, pagans and wiccans, midwifes, and so on. And despite the
fact that all are to some extent aligned in that they seek to throw out an
old and now dangerous worldview and bring in a new consciousness conducive
to harmony with Nature and others, there is very little overlap in these
publications.
In addition,
we noticed each faction promoting their own and denigrating closely aligned
groups. So we’d hear breathworkers scoffing at primalers, primalers
putting down past-lives therapists, psychohistorians repudiating the transpersonal
or spiritual, everybody putting down channellers and UFO theorists, and on
and on and on! This is hardly the way for a new-paradigm movement to
act! We need to stop thinking in terms of "us versus them" and instead
think in terms of alliances, win-win networking, and "we’re all in this together"
ways. This new-paradigm movement -- all factions of it -- needs
to learn how to walk its talk: It simply is not enough to talk
about "interconnectedness," "unity," "one consciousness," and "win-win,"
-- to mention just a few -- while one is greedily elbowing one's way into
prominence and position.
To both of us
— who’ve been involved in political movements, with Mickel actually having
had a successful albeit short career as a political activist — this tendency
in the consciousness-transformation movement to factionalize strikes us as
crass commercialism, sometimes as greed, sometimes as evidence of denial
and projection, and always as evidence of old-paradigm, old-age, patriarchal
"wolves" dressing up in new-paradigm/ New Age sheep’s clothing. Sometimes
we feel the New Age movement should "unionize"! . . . if it expects
to have any real effect on the larger world.
So seeing these
things that add up to a void in the New Age movement — the utter lack of
a place where deeply serious cathartic (and yet silly) elements of consciousness-change
can cross-fertilize with closely aligned modalities, information, resources,
and viewpoints — led to the birth of the publication,
Primal Spirit
Magazine
, and to this more comprehensive website, Primal Spirit, of the same
intent. At first we thought of this venture as a kind of Whole Life
Catalog of the Deeper Wave, with articles; it is already becoming more than
that. We hope you enjoy this site and that it enriches you; and we
invite your participation in it.
